Bangs Lake, a beautiful glacial lake in Illinois

Bangs Lake, a natural glacial lake in Illinois, is located in Wauconda. It was named in honor of Justus Bangs who arrived in Wauconda in 1836. Justus Bangs also reportedly named Wauconda after a Native American Indian character from a tale Bangs had read. Some believe Wauconda was named for an Indian chief, who is buried at the southern end of Bangs Lake. The Palatine, Lake Zurich, and Wauconda Railroad brought tourists to Wauconda in the early 1900s from Chicago. The beaches at Bangs Lake remained a popular vacation spot through the 1960s. Bangs Lake was used as a location for beach scenes in The Blues Brothers’ 1980 film. Click here for more about Bangs Lake
